World Environment Day

World Environment Day; two generous hands contribute soil and water to an Earth-shaped tree

World Environment Day, celebrated every year on 5 June, is a global initiative established by the United Nations in 1972 to promote global environmental awareness and action.

In 2024, the Day focuses on the restoration of ecosystems and the fight against desertification and drought, with the slogan ‘Our Earth. Our future. We are GenerationRestoration’.

It is a time to celebrate the progress made in protecting the environment and to recognise that every action, large or small, can impact on the future of our planet.

Italy, with its extraordinary natural heritage, faces significant challenges such as desertification and drought, problems that require immediate and concrete action.

ISPRA‘s BIGBANG model, which analyses the national hydrological situation, is an example of how science and technology can provide valuable tools for understanding and managing water resources in a sustainable way.

On this day, companies such as Trenitalia promote the use of more sustainable means of transport, offering discounts to encourage greener travel.

These initiatives demonstrate how every daily choice, from reducing the use of single-use plastic to preferring the train to the car, can contribute to a positive environmental impact.

Planting a tree, choosing local food, recycling and reusing are all gestures that, if adopted by many, can bring significant change.
